Place your hands over a glass of water and repeat the four phrases while focusing on love and gratitude
Ho'oponopono (pronounced ho-oh-poh-noh-poh-noh) is an ancient Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness. The word itself means "to make right" or "to correct an error." It is a profound spiritual and psychological process that combines prayer, confession, repentance, family therapy, and problem solving.
The modern version was popularized by Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len, who taught that by healing ourselves, we heal our world. The premise is simple yet profound: we are 100% responsible for everything in our lives — not because we caused it, but because it exists in our consciousness.
The practice involves repeating four simple phrases to the Divine Creator within: "I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you."
Ho'oponopono originated in ancient Hawaii as a family healing ritual. Traditional Hawaiian families would gather together to resolve conflicts and restore harmony. A kahuna (spiritual healer) would lead the process of prayer, discussion, and mutual forgiveness.
In 1976, Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona, a Hawaiian kahuna lapa'au, adapted the traditional practice for the modern world. She transformed it from a group process to an individual practice, making it accessible to anyone, anywhere.
Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len later worked with Morrnah and developed the simplified version we use today. His legendary work at Hawaii State Hospital — where he reportedly helped heal an entire ward of mentally ill criminals without ever meeting them personally — brought worldwide attention to this practice.
🌟 "I Am Sorry" — This phrase is not about blaming yourself. It is an acknowledgment that something in your subconscious mind has participated in creating the experience you are witnessing. You are taking 100% responsibility for all experiences in your life.
🌟 "Please Forgive Me" — You are asking the Divine within you (and the universe) to forgive those memories and programs running in your subconscious. This is a request to cleanse, clear, and release all limitations.
🌟 "Thank You" — Expressing gratitude for the healing that is taking place. Gratitude opens the heart and raises your vibration, creating space for miracles to manifest.
🌟 "I Love You" — The most powerful phrase. Love is the highest vibration in the universe. This phrase activates divine love within you, dissolving all negativity and replacing it with pure healing energy.
Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len worked as a staff psychologist at Hawaii State Hospital's ward for criminally insane patients. The conditions were terrible — staff members frequently called in sick, patients were dangerous and violent.
Dr. Hew Len never actually met with patients one-on-one. Instead, he reviewed their files while practicing Ho'oponopono — saying "I'm sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you" for whatever he felt within himself while reading about each patient.
Over the course of four years, patients who had been shackled started walking freely. Patients who had been heavily medicated were taken off medication. The ward was eventually closed because patients had healed enough to be transferred or released. Staff began to enjoy coming to work. The transformation was extraordinary.
Dr. Hew Len explained: "I was simply healing the part of me that created them."
While Ho'oponopono comes from a spiritual tradition, modern science offers fascinating parallels that support its effectiveness.
Neuroplasticity: Repeating the phrases with intention creates new neural pathways in the brain, replacing negative thought patterns with positive ones. Studies on forgiveness practices consistently show measurable improvements in mental health, stress reduction, and even physical health markers.
Dr. Emoto's Water Research: Dr. Masaru Emoto's experiments demonstrated that water exposed to loving words and intentions formed beautiful crystalline structures, while water exposed to negative words formed chaotic patterns — suggesting our thoughts and words have measurable effects on molecular structure.
Forgiveness Science: Research from Stanford University's Forgiveness Project shows that practicing forgiveness reduces anger, stress, depression, and increases hope, compassion, and life satisfaction.
Heart Coherence: The HeartMath Institute has demonstrated that feelings of love and gratitude create heart coherence — a measurable state of harmonious heart rhythm patterns associated with better health, cognition, and emotional stability.
"After practicing Ho'oponopono for 21 days, my chronic back pain disappeared. I hadn't been pain-free in 7 years. I believe it's because I forgave my father for something that happened long ago." — Maria, Brazil
"My business was failing. I started saying 'I love you' to my debt, to my customers, to my employees. Within 3 months, we had our best quarter ever." — James, Australia
"I was in a toxic relationship for 10 years. Practicing Ho'oponopono didn't just heal the relationship — it helped me love myself enough to make the right decision." — Priya, India
"I used to wake up with anxiety every morning. Now I wake up and say the four phrases. My life has transformed completely. I am peaceful, joyful, and free." — Carlos, Spain
1. Set the Intention: Begin by stating what you wish to heal or release. You can think of a person, situation, or feeling.
2. Feel It: Bring up the feeling associated with the issue. Don't suppress it — acknowledge it.
3. Say the Phrases: Slowly and with full feeling, repeat: "I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you." Direct these to the Divine, to your higher self, or to the universe.
4. Release: Let go of the outcome. Trust that the healing is happening at the level of pure consciousness.
5. Consistency: Practice for at least 5-15 minutes daily. Many practitioners say the phrases continuously throughout the day, especially when triggered.
6. 40-Day Commitment: Many teachers recommend practicing continuously for 40 days to create lasting transformation.
